An exercise of emotional reflection for Mother's Day
Figure out what you are feeling today and why
As you have experienced Mother’s Day today, what emotions have come up for you?
If it feels safe for you, I invite you to ask yourself these questions to explore your experience and emotions.
• How do I feel toward Mother’s Day today?
• Have I had any strong reactivity today, comfortable or uncomfortable?
• What sensations have I noticed today?
• What thoughts and beliefs have I noticed?
• Considering all of the above, which thought/sensation/reaction/emotion most wants my attention right now?
• As I focus on that, what rises to my attention?
• Can I name the distinct emotions I’m feeling around this thought/sensation/event/belief/reaction? (If you are having trouble naming specific emotions, try an emotion wheel like this one: www.markabrewer.com/words-to-describe-your-emotions)
• What is the situation or context that gave rise to these emotions?
• Do I have any past wounds or experiences that might be contributing to these emotions?
• Can I sit here for a moment and let these emotions exist in my body? How does that feel?
• What am I predicting might happen next? How is that impacting my emotions?
• What actions might I want to take as a result of these emotions?
How do you feel after going through this exercise? If you are feeling other things, go through the process again with a different focus.
