Last weekend I drove with my kids from Chicagoland to Milwaukee to visit my seminary friend Megan Westra and preach at her church. Megan and her family hosted us overnight, and my kids fell in love with her giant poodle-Bernese Mountain dog.
The lectionary readings included 1 Peter 5:7, so I focused on that text. Peter uses the same word as Paul does in Philippians 4:6, that is often translated care or worry or anxiety. I gave a talk on the Philippians text a couple months ago which I transcribed in another post if you want to read that:
For this sermon, I used the framework of that talk but swapped out the Philippians details for 1 Peter. Here are some of my research notes on Peter’s use of merimnaō and what he might have meant by saying “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (NIV)
